PSHE

PSHE including Relationships and Health Education

At LEAP Federation Schools, we teach Personal, Social, Health Education as a whole-school approach to underpin children’s development as people and because we believe that this also supports their learning capacity.

National Curriculum

The National Curriculum provides a structure and skills progression and knowledge for the PSHE curriculum taught throughout the school, which is linked to each unit of work, which reflects a balanced programme of study.

Curriculum overview

The Jigsaw Programme offers us a comprehensive, carefully thought-through Scheme of Work which brings consistency and progression to our children’s learning in this vital curriculum area. Jigsaw is a unique, spiral, progressive and effective scheme of work, aiming to prepare children/young people for life, helping them really know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.

The programme also supports the “Personal Development” and “Behaviour and Attitude” aspects required under the Ofsted Inspection Framework, as well as significantly contributing to the school’s Safeguarding and Equality Duties, the Government’s British Values agenda and the SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural) development opportunities provided for our children.

Cultural Capital

The PSHE curriculum will help LEAP Federation pupils to live healthy, safe, productive, capable, responsible and balanced lives.

It encourages them to be enterprising and supports them in making effective transitions, positive learning and choices and in achieving economic, physical and emotional wellbeing. The curriculum also provides opportunities for the children to reflect on, and clarify their own values and attitudes and explore the complex and sometimes conflicting range of values and attitudes they encounter now and in the future. To develop resilience and to provide strategies to prepare them for adulthood.

Fundamental British Values

Jigsaw contributes, as a good PSHE programme should, to the British Values agenda very significantly, both through the direct teaching of information and through the experiential learning children will enjoy.

The 5 strands of the British Values agenda have been mapped across every Puzzle and every Piece (lesson).

At LEAP, we place a strong emphasis on Pupil Voice and encourage children to contribute to the school.  We do this through school council, junior leadership teams, junior road safety officers (JRSO’s) and subject ambassadors.  We have also developed spaces in the school where children are able to feedback to senior leaders about their ideas, concerns and feedback.  We use this to improve our provision for the children.

We know how important it is for every child to have their voice heard, to have aspirations and to believe that their voice matters and can be a catalyst for change.  Children have opportunities to interview guest speakers and to take part in democratic processes through voting for school council.  Guest speakers have included David Lammy and Meg Hillier.

Rich, Relevant and Representative: The LEAP Empowerment Curriculum

At LEAP we endeavour to ensure that every child has access to a rich, relevant and representative curriculum.  Our PSHE curriculum provides ample opportunities to discuss sometimes difficult topics such as discrimination, representation, identity and respect and tolerance in a safe and positive environment.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

LEAP Federation Schools value PSHE as one way to support children’s development as human beings, to enable them to understand and respect who they are, to empower them with a voice and to equip them for life and learning.

We include the statutory Relationships and Health Education within our whole-school PSHE Programme.

To ensure progression and a spiral curriculum, we use Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE, as our chosen teaching and learning programme and tailor it to your children’s needs. The mapping document: Jigsaw 3-11 and statutory Relationships and Health Education, shows exactly how Jigsaw and therefore our school, meets the statutory Relationships and Health Education requirements.

This programme’s complimentary update policy ensures we are always using the most up to date teaching materials and that our teachers are well-supported.

Our PSHE policy is informed by existing DfE guidance:

  • Keeping Children Safe in Education (statutory guidance)
  • Respectful School Communities: Self Review and Signposting Tool (a tool to support a whole school approach that promotes respect and discipline)
  • Behaviour and Discipline in Schools (advice for schools, including advice for appropriate behaviour between pupils)
